More rains in the Country

Met Office informed that a low pressure (LPA) over upper Sindh is likely to weaken during next 12 hours. Another low pressure (LPA) area is likely to approach Sindh from 23rd August. Due to this weather system monsoon currents are penetrating in upper and southern parts of the country. Under the influence of this weather system:

  • Rain-wind/thundershower (with isolated heavy falls) is expected in northeastern parts of Balochistan from 19th to 22nd August while, in Sindh on 19th/20th August with occasional gaps.
  • Rain-wind/thundershowers (with isolated heavy falls) are expected at scattered places in Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa, Punjab, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan from 20th to 23rd August with occasional gaps.
  • More rain-wind/thundershower (with few heavy falls) is expected in Sindh, south Punjab, south and northeastern Balochistan on 23rd & 24th August.

Possible Impacts:

  • Heavy Rains may generate urban flooding in Sukkur, Dadu, Larkana, Jaccobabad and Shaheed Benazirabad on 19th / 20th August.
  • Heavy Rains may generate urban flooding in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Dadu and Sukkur on 23rd & 24th August.
  • Flash flooding is expected in Qilla Saifullah, Loralai, Barkhan, Kohlu, Mosa Khel, Sherani, Sibbi, Bolan, Kalat, Khuzdar, Lasbella and hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan on 19th/20th and from 22nd to 24th August.
  • Heavy Rains may generate urban flooding in Rawalpindi/Islamabad, Bahawalpur, Multan, Faislabad, Lahore, Gujranwala, Peshawar, Nowshera and Mardan on 21st & 22nd August.
  • Flash flooding is expected in local Nullahs of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Dir, Karak, Lakki Marwat, Bannu and Kashmir on 21st & 22nd August.
  • Rainfall may trigger landslides in Kashmir, hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Galiyat, Murree, Chillas, Diamir, Gilgit, Hunza, Astore, Ghizer and Skardu during the forecast period.
  • Travelers and tourists are advised to remain cautious during the forecast period.
  • Riverine flooding in Indus and its tributaries may occur during the forecast period.

Depression over North Arabian Sea
(Final Alert)

The Depression (Intense Low-Pressure Area) over North Arabian Sea has further moved southwestward, weakened into a well-marked low (WML) & now located near Latitude 21.8N & Longitude 63.0 E, at a distance of about 540km southwest of Karachi, 600km from Thatta & 410km south of Ormara. Maximum sustained surface winds are 40-45 km/hr around the system centre. The system is likely to weaken further, move northwestwards for some time and then recurve northeastwards as a low-pressure area.

Impacts:

  • Sea conditions would remain rough/ very rough till tomorrow.
  • Fishermen of Sindh & Balochistan are advised not to venture in open sea till tomorrow.

Vigorous Monsoon activity in coming days
More Torrential rains predicted in Sindh, Balochistan and South Punjab

Met Office informed that a depression has developed in Arabian Sea which is likely to move towards west along Makran coast. Due to this weather system monsoon currents are continuously penetrating in southern parts of the country. Another low pressure (LPA) is likely to approach Sindh on 16th August. Under the influence of this weather system:

  • Rain-wind/thundershower (with few heavy falls) is expected in Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa, Gilgit Baltistan and Kashmir from 14th to 16th August with occasional gaps.
  • Widespread rain-wind/thundershowers (with scattered heavy to very heavy falls) are expected in Sindh and Balochistan from 16th to 18th August with occasional gaps.

Possible Impacts:

  • Heavy Rains may generate urban flooding in Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Hyderabad, Dadu, Jamshoro, Sukkur, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad and Mirpurkhas from 14th to 18th August.
  • Flash flooding is expected in Qilla Saifullah, Loralai, Barkhan, Kohlu, Mosa Khel, Sherani, Sibbi, Bolan, Kalat, Khuzdar, Lasbella, Awaran, Turbat, Panjgur, Pasni, Jiwani, Ormara, Gwadar and hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan during the forecast period from 14th to 18th August.
  • Heavy Rains may generate urban flooding in Rawalpindi/Islamabad, Peshawar, Nowshera, Mardan, Faisalabad, Lahore and Gujranwala on 14th (night) to 16th August.
  • Flash flooding is expected in local Nullahs of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Shakargarh, Sialkot, Narowal, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Dir, Karak, Lakki Marwat, Bannu and Kashmir on 15th & 16th August.
  • Rainfall may trigger landslides in Kashmir, hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Galiyat, Murree, Chillas, Diamir, Gilgit, Hunza, Astore, Ghizer and Skardu during the forecast period.
  • Fisherman are advised to remain more cautious from 16th to 18th August.
  • Travelers and tourists are advised to remain more cautious during the forecast period.

Depression over Northeast Arabian Sea
(Alert-III)

The Depression (Intense Low-Pressure Area) over North Arabian Sea has moved in west-southwest direction during last 12 hours & now located near Latitude 22.0N & Longitude 64.0 E, at a distance of about 450km southwest of Karachi, 500km from Thatta & 350km south of Ormara. Maximum sustained surface winds are 45km/hr gusting to 55km/hr around the system centre. The system is likely to move further westwards till today evening and then recurve northeastwards and weaken gradually

Currently none of Pakistan coastal area is under any threat from this weather system. PMD Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre, Karachi is closely monitoring the system and updates will be issued accordingly.

Impacts:

  • Sea conditions would remain very rough during next 2 days.
  • Fishermen of Sindh & Balochistan are advised not to venture in open sea till tomorrow night.

Depression over Northeast Arabian Sea
(Alert-II)

The Depression (Intense Low-Pressure Area) over Northeast Arabian Sea has moved nearly in west-northwest direction during last 8 hours & now located near Latitude 22.5N & Longitude 65.0 E, at a distance of about 330km southwest of Karachi, 370km from Thatta & 290km south of Ormara. Maximum sustained surface winds are 45km/hr gusting to 55km/hr around the system centre. The system is likely to move further in west-northwest direction.

Currently none of Pakistan coastal area is under any threat from this weather system. PMD Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre, Karachi is closely monitoring the system and updates will be issued accordingly.

Impacts:

  • Sea conditions would remain very rough during next 3 days.
  • Fishermen of Sindh & Balochistan are advised not to venture in open sea till 14 August.

Depression over Northeast Arabian Sea

Met Office informed that the well-marked low-pressure area (WML) over Northeast Arabian Sea has intensified into a Depression (Intense Low-Pressure Area) with maximum wind speed of 50-55 km/hour. The system is located around Latitude 22.6N & Longitude 66.4E, at a distance of about 260km south/southeast of Karachi and 280km from Thatta. This weather system is likely to move in northwest direction initially and then westwards.

Currently none of Pakistan coastal area is under any threat from this weather system. PMD Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre, Karachi is closely monitoring the system and updates will be issued accordingly.

Impacts:

  • Sea conditions would remain very rough during next 3 days.
  • Fishermen of Sindh are advised not to venture in open sea from today to 14 August and Fishermen of Balochistan to remain extra cautious during the forecast period.

Monsoon activity likely to continue in coming days
More rains expected from 10th to 13th August, 2022

Met Office informed that monsoon currents are continuously penetrating in the country likely to become stronger from 10th August (Wednesday). Under the influence of this weather system:

  • Rain-wind/thundershower (with isolated heavy falls) is expected in Kashmir, Islamabad, northeast Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, eastern Balochistan and southeastern Sindh from 06th to 09th August with occasional gaps.
  • Rain-wind/thundershower (with scattered heavy falls) are expected in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and parts of Balochistan from 10th to 13th August with occasional gaps.

Possible Impacts:

  • Heavy Rains may generate urban flooding in Rawalpindi/Islamabad, Peshawar, Nowshera, Mardan, Faisalabad, Lahore and Gujranwala on 08th and from 10th to 12th August.
  • Flash flooding is expected in local Nullahs of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Shakargarh, Sialkot, Narowal, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Dir, Karak, Lakki Marwat, Bannu and Kashmir on 08th and from 10th to 12th August.

Japanese Vice Minister for Foreign Affair visited PMD Headquarters, Islamabad

A Japanese delegation headed by Honorable Parliamentary Vice Minister Foreign Affair, Japan Mr. Taro Honda visited Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Headquarters Office, Islamabad on 03rd August, 2022. The honorable guests were welcomed by the Director General, PMD Mr. Sahibzad Khan along with the senior officers of PMD.

Vice Minister of Japan Mr. Taro Honda and Director General, PMD along with his team visited the newly completed Specialized Medium Range Weather Forecasting Centre, Islamabad and observed its operationalization for Weather Forecasting of Pakistan. The delegation also visited Weather Surveillance Radar & Wind Profiler, National Weather Forecasting Centre (NWFC), HPC facility, SMRFC at Met Headquarter PMD, Islamabad. They were also briefed about the installations of Early Warning for Nullah Lai. The Japanese delegation took keen interest in the working of PMD in general and appreciated the efforts being made in provision of information and early warning services. The visiting delegation thanked the Director General, PMD for their warm welcome and hospitality.

Director General, PMD thanked the delegation for extending cooperation to Pakistan in the field of Early Warning expertise.

Knowledge Sharing Workshop on Socioeconomic Benefits of Weather and Climate Services in Pakistan

Pakistan Meteorological Department in collaboration with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), University of Leeds UK and Met Office UK organized a Knowledge Sharing Workshop on Socioeconomic Benefits of Weather and Climate Services in Pakistan at Ramada Hotel Islamabad on 2nd August 2022.

Director General, PMD, Mahr Sahibzad Khan welcomed the distinguished delegates and briefly highlighted on the meteorological services being rendered and socio-economic benefits being obtained by the wide variety of socio-economic sectors. He stressed on the best and efficient utilization of Met. services specifically in agriculture sector.

Dr. Mandira Shrestha from ICIMOD also briefed on the key points of the study and efforts being made recommendations on further coordinated actions and planning practices for maximum yield and minimizing the losses due to the harsh weather and climate in general.

Participants from sectoral organizations like agriculture, academia and scientists and researcher participated the event and shared their experiences and expertise for the improvement and efficient services delivery processes.
