(Cold weather in Balochistan and Sindh)

 

A westerly wave is expected to enter in Pakistan from Sunday that will produce rain with snowfall over the hills from Sunday to Wednesday.

·         Rain-thunderstorm is expected at isolated places in Northeast Balochistan, Sindh on Sunday and Monday.

·         Rain-thunderstorm with snowfall over the hills is expected at isolated places in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA from Sunday to Tuesday.

·         Rain-thunderstorm with snowfall over the hills is is expected at scattered places in Punjab, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir from Monday to Wednesday.

·         Cold wave conditions are likely to prevail in most parts of Balochistan, Sindh including Karachi during the coming week.

·         Snowfall is also expected in Murree and Galliyat on Monday/Tuesday.

Prevalent Smog likely to subside

  

Met-Office informed that a rain bearing weather system is expected to enter in Pakistan from Sunday (night) and is likely to grip upper and central parts of the country on Monday/Tuesday. Under the influence of this system the weather will remain such as;

 Rain/thunderstorm is expected at scattered places of Balochistan (Quetta, Kalat, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Zhob and Makran divisions), while at isolated places in Sindh on Sunday (night) and Monday. Rain/thunderstorm with snowfall over the hills is expected at scattered places in KPK, FATA, Islamabad, upper Punjab (Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad and Sahiwal divisions), Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan, while at isolated places in south Punjab (Multan, D.G.Khan, Bahawalpur divisions) from Monday to Wednesday. 

Spokesman further informed that prevalent smoggy conditions in urban areas will subside in the coming week due to temperature fall and expected rain.

“Due to the developing low pressure area off Indian Coast in the Arabian Sea, the sea breeze along Pakistani Coastline will weaken. Under such conditions, temperatures along Pakistan coastal areas including Karachi will gradually increase during the next 4-5 days resulting into moderate heat wave conditions.

Daytime high temperatures in Karachi may cross 40°C on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Rains predicted in the country during the current week

Met-Office informed that strong monsoon currents are likely to continue penetrating in southern parts of the country, while moderate currents are also expected to enter upper parts and Kashmir from Tuesday to Friday. Under the influence of this weather system;

  • Widespread rain/thunderstorm associated with gusty winds (isolated heavy to very heavy falls) is expected in lower Sindh (Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, Karachi divisions) and at scattered places in Sukkur, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad, Kalat, Quetta, Sibbi, Zhob and Naseerabad divisions from Wednesday to Friday.
  • Rain-thunderstorm is also expected at scattered places in Bahawalpur, Multan, D.G. Khan and Sahiwal divisions, while at isolated places in Hazara, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha and Lahore divisions, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir on Wednesday/Thursday.

Spokesman of Met-Office informed that monsoon currents will start penetrating in Sindh from Saturday that will produce widespread rain/dust-thunderstorm with isolated moderate to heavy falls in Lower Sindh (Mirpur Khas, Hyderabad & Karachi divisions) from Saturday to Monday. Rain/dust-thunderstorm with isolated heavy falls also expected at a number of places in Balochistan (Zhob, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Kalat & Makran divisions) from Sunday to Tuesday. Localized Heavy downpours may generate Urban Flooding and Flash Flooding in the vulnerable areas of Balochistan.

Spokesman further informed that present weather system in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) & Kashmir has weakened. However, more monsoon rains predicted in upper parts (Upper Punjab, KP, Gilgit-Baltistan & Kashmir) of the country during Sunday and Wednesday. Moderate to Heavy falls may generate Land Sliding in the vulnerable areas of upper parts of the country.

PMD Pollen Monitoring Network for Spring 2017

 The Pollen is likely to start in March in Islamabad and Rawalpindi which coincides with spring season. Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has been monitoring the airborne pollen in Islamabad throughout the year. Pollen monitoring unit of PMD has installed pollen monitoring devices during the spring season in different sectors of Islamabad (H-8, E-8, F-10 and G-6). The pollen concentration increases gradually with the onset of spring season and attains its peak around mid March. The most abundant pollen types in Islamabad are from 08 trees (i. e. Paper Mulberry, Acacia, Eucalyptus, Pines, Grasses, Cannabis, Dandelion and Alternaria). Out of all these plants Paper Mulberry shares about 97% of the total pollen and its concentration touches the extreme limits of about 40,000 per cubic meter of air at the peak of the blossom season. People suffering from Asthma and respiratory diseases experience serious consequences due to sharp increase in pollen concentrations. PMD will continue reporting pollen count on daily basis on PMD website as well as through radio, print and electronic media till the end of the season in mid April. Weather outlook in the country during next 2 to 3 days

Weather Advisory for next two days

An effective weather system producing rainfall/snowfall in different parts of Pakistan is likely to persist for a couple of days with gradually increasing intensity.

Balochistan:

Ø  Widespread rainfall with occasional heavy falls is expected on tonight and tomorrow. Moderate to heavy snowfall is also expected in Quetta, Zhob and Kalat divisions.

Ø  There is a high probability of increase in stream flows and Nullahs till 25th January.

Ø  Moderate to heavy falls are likely in Makran coast, Kech, Panjgur, Washuk, Kharan, Khuzdar and adjoining areas tonight.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa/FATA:

Ø  Widespread rainfall/snowfall is expected over upper KP and FATA tonight and tomorrow.

Ø  Heavy snowfall is expected in Chitral, Shangla, Naran, Kaghan and Hazara division on 25th and 26th January, 2017.

     Punjab: 

Ø  Widespread rain with isolated heavy falls is expected in north eastern Punjab on 25th and 26th Jan, 2017.

Ø  Intermittent heavy snowfall is likely over Murree and Galliyat hills.

Gilgit-Baltistan:

Ø  Scattered rain/snowfall is expected on 25th and 26th Jan, 2017.

Ø  Landslides may occur in the vulnerable areas of GB.

Kashmir:

Ø  Events of heavy snowfall are likely in AJK during 25th to 26th Jan, 2017.

Ø  Landslides and avalanches are expected during the period.

Ø  Local streams may be flashy due to anticipated heavy downpour.

 Sindh:

Ø  Isolated light to moderate rainfall is expected in the province on 25th Jan, 2017. Karachi may also receive light rainfall on 25th Jan, 2017.

More Rains predicted during the coming week

Heavy snowfall expected over the hills

 

Met Office informed that a strong weather system (westerly wave) is expected to produce more rains/snowfall over the hills in the country during the coming week. The detailed forecast is;

 

Balochistan:

Rain with snowfall over the hills is expected at a number of places from Monday to Wednesday. Heavy snowfall is expected over the hills of Quetta, Zhob and Kalat divisions on Tuesday and Wednesday.

 

Sindh:

Rain with thunderstorm is expected at scattered places of the province on Tuesday and Wednesday.

 

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa/FATA:

Rain with snowfall over the hills is expected at most of the places from Monday to Thursday. Intermittent heavy snowfall may occur over the hills of FATA, Malakand and Hazara divisions on Wednesday and Thursday.

 

Punjab/Islamabad:

Rain with snowfall over the hills is expected at a number of places from Monday to Thursday. Intermittent heavy snowfall may occur over the hills of Murree and Galliyat from Tuesday to Thursday.

 

Gilgit-Baltistan/Kashmir:

Rain with snowfall over the hills is expected at a number of places from Monday to Thursday. Intermittent heavy snowfall may occur over the hills of GB and Kashmir from Tuesday to Thursday.

 

Note:

Intermittent rain may trigger landslides in the vulnerable areas of KP, GB and Kashmir. Isolated heavy falls may generate flash floods in the local streams of Balochistan.

Due to expected heavy snowfall in mountain areas, public is advised to follow NDMA/NHA instructions on road conditions.

All concerned authorities are advised to remain ALERT during the coming week.

Met. Office informed that another active westerly wave is likely to enter in the country through Balochistan on Friday Under the influence of this weather system,

Balochistan:

Rain with snowfall over the hills is expected at a number of places in Balochistan from Friday to Sunday.

Sindh:

Rain-thunderstorm is expected at isolated places in Sindh during Friday to Saturday.

KP/FATA:

Rain-thunderstorm with snowfall over the hills is expected at scattered places in KP, FATA from Saturday to Wednesday

Punjab/Islamabad:

Rain-thunderstorm with snowfall over the hills is expected at scattered places in upper Punjab from Sunday to Wednesday. Rain is also expected at isolated places in southern Punjab on Saturday/Sunday.

GB/Kashmir:

Rain-thunderstorm with snowfall over the hills is expected at scattered places in Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir from Saturday to Wednesday.

Cold wave conditions in the country likely to continue in next 3-4 days

       Office informed that the wet spell of rain/snowfall over upper parts of the country has subsided. Due to recent heavy snowfall over the hills of northern areas, upper KP, Galliyat and Kashmir, cold wave has grip most parts of the country.

  • The night temperatures in most parts of the northern areas, upper KP, Murree, Kashmir and north Balochistan have fallen below zero point.

  • The current cold wave conditions are likely to prevail in most parts of the country during next 3-4 days. The night temperature in most parts of the country may further fall upto 04°C.

  • Some of the plain areas of KP and Punjab may experience frost during the period.

  • Due to cold air, the night temperature in Karachi and coastal areas are also expected to fall during next 2-3 days.

Met. Office informed that a westerly wave is likely to approach upper parts of the country on Tuesday. Under the influence of this weather system, intermittent rain/thunderstorm and snowfall are expected over upper parts of the country from Tuesday to Saturday.

  • Scattered rain is expected over Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, FATA, Upper Punjab (Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Lahore divisions), Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir

  • Isolated light rain/snowfall over the hills is expected over Quetta and Zhob divisions.
